Earlier this year we did a post on Three Things young people should take care of to help life in the ‘real’ world be less stressful. Today we’re discussing why it is important to list your teenage driver on your auto policy as soon as they get a permit.
*Most Insurance companies require you to list or exclude all drivers and/or household members age 14 and up on the policy.
*Prior coverage is imperative when your teen gets his or her own policy. Without evidence of a minimum of 6 months prior coverage, his/her rate could be significantly higher than a driver who was on their parent’s policy. That’s a lot of money.
*An unlisted household driver will pose a problem in the instance of a claim.
*Some insurance companies will list a permitted child driver at no additional cost. This is a driver with a learner’s permit only. Once the child gets a permanent license, that will change.
*Prior coverage and Driving experience go hand-in-hand in the company offering discounts when your teen gets his/her own policy.
*Peace of mind. True, your insurance premiums will increase when you list a teenage driver on your policy, but you can’t put a price on peace of mind. Remember also, some companies give nice discounts for good grades, driver’s education and/or driver safety courses.
*Here’s another good reason–having your teen pay for his/her share of the increased insurance premiums will teach them responsibility and prepare them for what they will have to pay when they do get out on their own.
Another thought: While adding your teen to your auto policy it is wise to consider getting their own life insurance plan. Remember, the younger and healthier they are, the cheaper the premium!
