If you believe everything you hear or half of what you read, today’s youth (Gen X and Millennials) are some of the most irresponsible youngsters to hit the economic market since the dawn of mankind.
Okay, maybe they’re not that bad.
But seriously, some of the young adults today have no clue what to expect when they get out into the real world. Nor are they prepared to handle the demands of an increasingly hostile environment.
This is not always a parent’s fault, because for the most part, parents are so busy trying to keep their own heads above water, they don’t have (or make) the time to teach their children three basic concepts of being a productive member of society.
These three things are important to learn about and take care of…..
#1: Credit Record
#2: Work Record
#3: Driving Record
When these three things were mentioned in a conversation, the question arose: “What about criminal record?”
If you’re taking care of these three, chances are you won’t have a criminal record!
How does this relate to insurance?
Two out of these three things are factors companies use when rating automobile insurance. Along with your credit record and driving record, insurance companies consider your zip code, marital status, gender, the laws, claims and population of your demographic area (State and Parish).
Another thing parents and young drivers may not be aware of is the need for proof of prior coverage. It is important for the parents to add their child to the insurance policy when he/she becomes of age and gets a drivers license. This will benefit them later when applying for their own individual policy.
Yes, it may be expensive to do this, but most insurance companies will give discounts for good grades, drivers education and/or driver safety courses.
Taking extra courses to improve your driving and therefore, rates, shows respect for your driving record. It’s a pretty sure bet good grades will later be reflected in your work ethic/record and with education and discipline, your credit record too.
Parents, think ahead and teach your children from a young age to cultivate excellence in these three areas of their life.
Youngsters, think ahead to the kind of future you want, when your parents attempt to train you up in the way you should live.
Until next time, be informed and be prepared!
