Tips to Make Your Move Easier

4/11/2018

Whether you think of moving as a grand adventure or one of the most stress-filled undertakings you ever endure, changing locations is something many of us do at least once in our lifetime. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you transition a little more smoothly.

*Plan ahead. Contact the utility, cable and other such companies in advance. This goes for Insurance companies too! Get quotes on auto and home insurance in your new location. Remember, if you’re moving to another state, you’ll need to check into vehicle registration as well as insurance. This also applies to recreational vehicles (camper, RV, Boat, etc.)

*If you're on Medicare, you'll need to change your Medicare and/or Supplement plan. One more thing, if you're not selling your current home, you'll need to change from a homeowner's to dwelling policy or vacant dwelling policy.

*Change your address early. Not only through the post office, but contact your creditors and insurance agent and/or companies and make sure you update your records. This is especially important for Life policies.

*Contact schools and/or daycares – again, in advance and, if possible, take the kids to visit. This will make the change easier on everyone.

*Be organized! Don’t just toss things in boxes. Take time to wrap breakable items securely and label them accordingly. Packing and labeling per room is also highly recommended and will create much less stress when unloading and setting up your new home.

*Declutter as you go. Experts say decluttering and organizing your home helps keep your life running smoothly. Moving is a wonderful opportunity to do this. Shred and get rid of old documents. Donate gently used items and toys. Sell things you no longer need or use.

*Make it fun. Moving into a new city, state, town or even a new house in your native area can and should be a time of joy and excitement. If possible, let your children help sort through their items and pack their room. Color code or use stickers to distinguish one child’s boxes from the others.

These are just a few suggestions to help make moving less stressful for you and your family. If you’re one of our clients anticipating a move, be sure to contact us so we can update your records.  If you’ve recently moved into SW Louisiana, and in need of home, mobile home, renters, auto, Medicare or life insurance, give us a call! 337-433-1683

Until next time, take care and remember…. You may not have much control over whether or not you move but the the attitude with which you do so is all yours.
