In this day and age where cancer of every kind imaginable is being diagnosed on a regular basis, I thought we’d take a look at the benefits of having a “Cancer” insurance policy. First off, let’s make it clear that Cancer Insurance is NOT major medical. It is a supplemental policy that pays you cash to help with expenses while you are receiving treatment. Cancer Insurance was designed to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses and bridge the gap between what your primary insurance does and doesn't cover. Here are some things to know when researching a Cancer Insurance Policy… *As with other forms of insurance, age, health, and family medical history will sometimes (depending on the company) play a role in the cost of your cancer insurance policy. * Similar to a hospital indemnity policy, most Cancer policies pay cash directly to YOU. This money can be used for hospital and treatment deductibles and copays or simply to pay your monthly expenses if you are out of work due to your cancer illness and/or treatments. Some will also pay for cancer-related expenses above and beyond what your health insurance covers. Some even offer annual screening to help catch Cancer in its early stages. * Some Cancer policies pay a lump sum plus weekly or monthly benefits. Others simply pay a lump sum or weekly/monthly. *Once you obtain a Cancer policy, many of them have clauses that protect you from losing your coverage due to age, health and many offer a set premium that does not change as you get older. Some companies also have access to emotional support for its policyholders. *Many Cancer policies can be set up for payroll deduction or automatic bank withdrawal, so you never have to worry about missing your payments. Many are portable, meaning you can take it with you should your employment change. Please know, some cancer policies do not pay for non-melanoma skin cancer or carcinoma in situ (CIS) which is the same as “precancerous cells,” nor will you be eligible if you’ve had cancer of some sort in the past. Some will also deny coverage if you have a disease such as Hepatitis that often leads to cancer. Therefore, it is very important to have a local agent who can explain their cancer policy in detail so that you understand completely what is and is not covered!
