Changing the Way You Look at Insurance

2/14/2018

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” This quote was made famous by Dr. Wayne Dyer, PHD and it is true in so many ways.

Of course, Dr. Dyer was talking about people, places, things and circumstances in your life, but let’s examine this advice in light of insurance.

Many people believe insurance in a “necessary evil,” something they are forced to have which eats a hole in their paycheck. Insurance is known as a “useless waste of hard earned dollars” and companies regarded as corporate conglomerates who take advantage of the little man with outrageous rates and ridiculous guidelines.

But, what would happen if you changed the way you look at insurance?

How about if you view your insurance company as a safety net or silent partner protecting your home, auto and family in the instance of an accident, death or disaster?

Think about it! How many people have thousands of dollars easily accessible for use in the instance of an emergency?

Let’s look at some ways your insurance company protects you….

Automobile Accident: *Your insurance company pays for damages you cause, thereby helping to protect you from possible law suit. Not at fault? Your collision coverage pays to have your vehicle repaired or replaced. Car stolen or vandalized, flooded or damaged by hail? Comprehensive coverage takes care of all these types of losses. You or your passengers hurt or injured? Medical Payments and/or Uninsured motorist coverage kicks in to cover ambulance fees, hospital charges, etc.

Fire/Windstorm/Hurricane/*Flood/Ice & Snow: *Your home (or mobile home) insurance policy pays to have your damages repaired or, in the instance of a total loss, home and personal property (contents) replaced. It may also cover living expenses while the claim is being processed and repairs made.

A visitor gets hurt on your property: The property liability portion of your home/mobile home insurance policy pays to (hopefully) protect you from law suit which could result in loss of wages, loss of home and all sorts of financial disaster.

Unexpected death due to illness or accident: Life insurance covers the cost of final expenses, funeral and burial costs or whatever the family’s needs may be in the event of the unexpected death of a loved one–especially one of the bread winners. Mortgage Protection (or term life) insurance will ensure the family does not lose their home should one of the primary mortgagees die.

These are just a few examples of how insurance can protect you and your family.

Granted, many people pay for years and never file a claim on their home or auto policy. Some even say they could put the premiums they pay into a savings account instead. But seriously, how many people would actually do this and maintain it for the long haul? Would that really be enough? Add up your annual premiums and multiply that by 5 or 10 or 20….does it truly equal the total monetary value of your policy?

So, the next time you get ready to pay your insurance premiums and are tempted to complain, take a deep breath and think about all the ways your silent partner protects you from financial disaster.

Until next time take care and remember…. when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
