Many times in the Insurance Industry, we hear the term “SR-22 Insurance.” However, SR-22 is not a type of insurance. Want to know more? Read on..... SR-22 is a Certificate of Insurance or Financial Responsibility form required by the state to reinstate driving privileges after an incident – usually a DUI, uninsured accident or other traffic related offense. Some states even require an SR-22 form for failure to pay child support.
Your auto insurance company files this form for you. This form verifies to the state that you are meeting and maintaining the state’s minimum liability coverage requirements. Don’t have a vehicle but need to keep your driver’s license? A Non-Owner policy with SR-22 filing will meet the state’s financial responsibility requirements that allow you to maintain a valid driver’s license. If your main form of transportation is a motorcycle, you can even have an SR-22 form filed with your motorcycle insurance carrier and possibly save you money. Another thought, if you have auto and motorcycle insurance, check with your agent on which policy you should file the SR-22 form. In most instances, it is easier and cheaper if you file on your motorcycle policy in lieu of the auto policy. Doing this may also reduce the length of time the SR-22 affects your insurance. Each state is different and not all require SR-22 forms so for more information contact your local DMV. If you are in need of SR-22 filing, give us a call and see if we can help you. Until next time, take care and remember – Before removing an SR-22, contact the DMV to confirm the time frame necessary to maintain your filing. Removing early may jeopardize your driving privileges!
