Back in April we talked about discounts available on most Home Owner policies. One discount we didn’t mention is IBHS Fortified.
Not all companies offer this discount and frankly not many people know what exactly IBHS Fortified ™ means!
So I thought it would be a good topic to explore and explain.
In 2010 engineering and building standards for new and existing homes was developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) in order to improve resilience against natural disasters, specifically Hurricanes. The idea was/is to reduce losses and damage to property by fortifying critical elements of the structure, roof and foundation of homes and thereby lessen catastrophic losses all around.
IBHS offers programs and training for homeowners, contractors and evaluators to ensure an IBHS Fortified ™ home actually meet these standards.
In response to these improved building standards, some insurance companies implemented a discount on rates for an IBHS Fortified ™ newly-built or updated home.
There are three levels of certification: Bronze, Silver and Gold and each level has its own set of guidelines and building codes.
In order to qualify for this discount your home must be inspected and certified by an IBHS Evaluator. The certificate is good for 5 years, after which inspection must be done again.
